Pilates (pronounced pill-r-tees)
is a health and fitness programme to re-align and strengthen the
body.
The 5 Pilates Principles are breathing, pelvic alignment and stability,
ribcage placement, scapular placement and cervical placement and
stability.
Why is it different from other forms of fitness disciplines?
The focus is on re-alignment of the whole body and stabilisation of the muscles
that support the spine. The emphasis is on the lengthening of muscles rather
than shortening. Pilates builds lean, long muscles rather than bulk mass strength,
whilst also promoting good joint stability and posture.
Who is the programme designed for?
Everyone can benefit from the Pilates method because the exercises are done with
precision. You should not experience any pain or discomfort, as you are able
to work within your own range of movement, gradually increasing strength, plus
your body awareness and knowledge.
How long will it be before I see and feel the results?
The changes are subtle to begin with as, initially, the stabilising muscles will
be weak. As you progress, the posture and muscle strength benefits are profound
and you start to accumulate those benefits from the first session. |
